IT’S a mixed bag with weather in the Territory this week as fire danger in the Top End gives way to muggy conditions and the south braces for possible severe thunderstorms and rain.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned Top End residents should start to prepare for the humidity from Thursday as dry easterly winds ease, making way for moist afternoon sea breezes and sticky conditions.
There is a chance for isolated showers and possible storms, but this is likely to be restricted to the coastal areas along the eastern Top End and north East Arnhem land.
This weekend will be a different story with isolated coastal showers and thunderstorms forecast to spread inland and to the west coast of the Top End, including Darwin.
Get ready for rain #NT. A major trough will bring thunderstorms & rain to southern NT this Thursday and Friday including in #AliceSprings. Later this week in the south a major trough is forecast to drop up to 20-30mm of rain to the southern most parts of the NT, mostly in the Simpson Desert.
While most of the rain will fall in remote areas Yulara and Alice Springs could see two-day rainfall totals of 1-5mm, and potentially up to 10mm.
Thunderstorms, possibly severe with damaging winds, are forecast to move through the southern region from Thursday.
These thunderstorms are forecast to affect the Alice Springs area Thursday late afternoon/evening before moving quickly to the east and dropping the heaviest rainfalls as they cross into Queensland and South Australia.
BOM said over the weekend Darwin could see showers and a chance of a storm this weekend.
On Saturday Central Australia may be foggy due to a weak high bringing low clouds.
Higher than average temperatures are set to continue with 30°C to 35°C maximums forecast in Alice Springs.
