‘Biggest crowds we’ve had in years’: More than 6000 pack out Darwin’s Anzac Day Dawn Service

A CROWD of more than 6000 gathered at the Darwin Cenotaph for one of the biggest Anzac Day Dawn Services in years.

Darwin RSL Sub Branch President Stephen Gloster said he was “impressed” to see the record turnout after the coronavirus restrictions forced Territorians to commemorate Anzac Day at home last year.

Thousands of people began arriving at the Darwin Cenotaph from 5am today to get a good spot for this year’s Dawn Service and the park was packed by 6am to the point where people had to stand on the sidewalk.

“It was definitely bigger than last year and the year before when we had about 6000 and I think it was bigger than that,” Mr Gloster said.

A crowd of more than 6000 gathered at the Darwin Cenotaph for one of the biggest Anzac Day Dawn Service in years.

“It would be one of the biggest crowds we’ve had in years.

“The people in Darwin have always been big supporters of the dawn service and the march.

“It was really good, especially to see all the kids and families to get out of bed so early and line up here at 5am in the morning. I was very impressed.”
