2021 Croc Races at Berry Springs Tavern

IT WAS a classic Territory scene at the Berry Springs Tavern with beers, sweat and crocs in celebration of the Melbourne Cup.

Punters were hanging off the rails to get a glimpse of the iconic crocodile races.

Anyone who wanted to try their luck and have a stake in the race bought a raffle ticket in the morning. Tickets were drawn and temporary croc owners were made.

The first race took off at 12.15pm with Caitlyn Newton taking home a cash prize after her reptilian friend Croc a Ship muscled it’s way over the line in first place.

Croc a Ship had a stellar run, taking a half a second break to peek at the audience of kids cheering it on, before dominating the finish line.

“This is my first time being here,” Ms Newton said.

“I’m going to go spend (the prize) on beers.”

Meanwhile, the Noonamah frog races began with punters jumping into action, starting with a high stakes auction with frog bids averaging about $800 to $1000.

Noonamah local Kezia Purick nearly peaked early in bidding by innocently waving to her mate, auctioneer Frank Schembri.

Ms Purick said you place bid’s on a frog half way through the auction because people get too excited at the start and then desperate at the end.

“I keep an eye out,” Ms Purick said. “The middle is the best time to bet.”
