THE sting of the return to school costs will be softened with parents being able to access $150 vouchers.

The voucher can be spent on anything from books, uniforms and the cost of excursions.

Education Minister Lauren Moss said the vouchers were designed to help families set their kids up for the best start to the new school year.

“This is really important for supporting families with cost of living and making sure that we are breaking down some of those barriers for families coming so back into school for the new school year,” Ms Moss said.

School gates will open to 34,000 NT students on February 1, with Alawa Primary School welcoming 40 preschool students and 20 new students in other year levels.

“So it’s great to see some new families joining us we will have about 330 children to start the year,” principal Sandy Cartwright said.

Mother of three Katie Wedel said the vouchers helped her to purchase her daughters new uniforms and books.

“The back to school vouchers, are hugely beneficial we’ve had end of year occasions, Christmas, six weeks holidays that all comes with additional expenses,” Ms Wedel said.

“Then to be able to come into school, and have the voucher to cover the cost of the book packs and the uniforms. It just has a significant impact.”
