POLICE have unveiled a state-of-the-art Nighthawk tyre deflation device to be trialled for the next two months as part of the force’s new pursuit policy.
Up to 30 police were being trained to use the automated device which can be launched across a road to puncture the tyres of cars fleeing police.
Superintendent Tony Fuller said the device caused tyres to slowly deflate, reducing the speed of the car.
The trial comes after a Christmas period dominated by youths trying to evade police during property crime sprees.

The device was successfully trialled at Hidden Valley Racetrack Thursday morning.
Supt Fuller said if the two-month trial was successful, more of the $5000 devices would be purchased.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the trial was one of several fast-tracked initiatives designed to improve public safety and security for all Territorians following a recent spike in property crime.
“Every Territorian has the right to feel safe and expect their homes, businesses and property to be secure — we know people are concerned about a recent spike in crime and we have listened and taken action,” he said.
“Safety is a concern for everyone when property crime is involved, and tools such as the explosive tyre deflation devices will assist our officers to safely deflate the tyres of a stolen vehicle and capture offenders.
“Police have a tough job to do — and do it well — and the Territory Labor Government is determined that they will have the tools they need.”
