MORE than 1000 people dressed in their finest gathered beside the Darwin Turf Club track on Saturday night to enjoy one of the biggest, and most elegant, nights on the annual Darwin social calendar.
The Sportsbet Darwin Turf Club Gala Ball saw about 1200 people flock to the Turf Club lawn to enjoy a three-course dinner and top entertainment under the stars, at one of the major events part of the club’s eight-day Darwin Cup Carnival.
As well as stunning outfits, fine wines and gourmet food, the event also featured Australian entertainer Rhonda Burchmore as MC and music from a Robbie Williams tribute band and a DJ.
Ballgoer Henrietta Booth said the event was one of the highlights of the Darwin social calendar and it was exciting to be attending, especially as Covid-19 lockdowns meant such large-scale events weren’t currently possible in many other parts of Australia.
“Given everything that’s happening in Australia at the moment, it’s amazing that we can have everyone together and dress up and have a night out in Darwin,” she said.
“It’s a good opportunity to get your ball gowns on and suits and ties, and have a good time.”
Her friend Carolina Silva said she was impressed with the intimate trackside setting.
“This is beautiful,” she said.
“I actually came last year, and this is definitely a step up from then.
“I’m looking forward to just having a good time and enjoying the night with everyone.”
Fellow attendee Nathalie Campion, who has attended the past few past gala balls, said the event was a rare opportunity for Darwin residents to dress to the nines.
She said she was looking forward to a night of “great entertainment, dancing, good food, good friends – just a happy time.”
The Sportsbet Darwin Turf Club Gala Ball was moved from Little Mindil Beach to the club premises several weeks ago following Covid-19 lockdowns in Sydney and Melbourne, which were expected to impact attendance numbers.
