It has been a colder than average dry season right across the NT, but one remote town has broken the Territory’s record for most consecutive nights below 0C.

Alice Springs’ run of consecutive minus temperature nights came to an end on Monday after recording 15 freezing mornings in a row from July 3-17.

The coldest night in that period was on July 15 with the minimum temperature running as low as -4C.

However, that run came to an end on Monday when the township recorded a warm 0.4C morning, following a July high max temperature of 24.6C during the day on Sunday.

The Territory record was previously held by Altunga, which recorded 13 nights in a row in 2002.

Bureau of Meteorology NT forecaster Moses Raiko said the cool temperatures were likely to return later in the week.

“This time of year we do get these ridges that dominate southern and central Australia, with those dominating highs impacting that part of the continent,” Mr Raiko said.

“It’s been great to see those temperatures remain relatively cool, though the maximum daytime temperatures have risen above 20 since Friday, which is above average.

“We will see those cooler temperatures return for a brief period potentially from Thursday.”

As for the Top End daytime temperatures have gone up again in recent days, in part due to the return of humidity.

But another cold snap might not be too far on the horizon.

“We have seen the return of some humidity and it’s warmer during the day, those temperatures getting up into the 30s,” Mr Raiko said.

“These temperatures are likely to dip back down around Friday as we have another dry surge pushing into the Top End on Thursday.”
