Police are calling for witnesses after a woman pedestrian died in a tragic incident in Holtze overnight.

NT Police said a vehicle struck the woman pedestrian on Thorngate Rd at 7.30pm on Friday.

Immediately following the first collision, the woman was struck by a second vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

Police said the woman died at the scene.

The road was closed with traffic diversions while a crime scene was established.

Both drivers returned negative results for roadside drug and alcohol testing.

The road has since been reopened.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said the scene was “particularly confronting” as emergency crews recovered the deceased woman from underneath a large vehicle.

“Major Crash detectives have commenced an investigation to determine how and why this crash occurred,” Detective Lindner said.

“Forensic work is currently being undertaken to identify the deceased woman through fingerprints and DNA.”

Police are appealing for witnesses travelling along Thorngate Road in Yarrawonga prior to 7.30pm who can help identify the movements of the pedestrian.

In particular, detectives want to speak with the driver of a 4WD who was travelling on Thorngate Road towards Yarrawonga shortly before the crash.

It is believed the driver tried to alert an oncoming vehicle of a road hazard by flashing high beam lights.

Any witnesses who saw the pedestrian or believe they can help with the investigation are urged to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference number 10157928.

The woman’s death takes the Territory’s road toll to a tragic 45 so far this year, which is 10 more than for the entire 2021 period.
