A CATHAY Pacific plane has been forced to make an emergency landing in Darwin

A CATHAY Pacific international passenger jet has had to make an emergency landing in Darwin.

The plane landed in Darwin at 8am due to mechanical issues.

The plane was carrying 256 passengers and was travelling from Melbourne to Hong Kong when the decision was made to divert to Darwin.

It is not yet known what the mechanical issues were or for how long the plane will be grounded.

The mechanical issues are being fixed by Qantas staff.

It is not known if the passenger have been allowed off the plane.
