A Victorian woman was rescued by helicopter from the Larapinta Trail on Sunday, days after police warned travellers to be prepared over the Easter break.
The 40-year-old hiker first activated her emergency location device (EPIRB) near Fringe Lily Creek Campsite late on Saturday afternoon.
Southern Watch Commander Senior Sergeant Alistair Gall told ABC Alice Springs the woman became “dehydrated and exhausted”, prompting her to make the emergency broadcast.
“She activated the beacon and requested assistance,” Sergeant Gall said.
“Because it was quite late in the day on Saturday, we were unable to send any assistance then.
“However we were aware that she was with a friend and able to communicate using her EPIRB, so she was advised to stay where she was and await rescue.”
The helicopter rescue came the following morning at 8am, with the pair hydrating themselves throughout the night using an appropriate filter from the nearby creek.
“They did all the right things,” Sergeant Gall said.
“They took an EPIRB, activated it when they needed assistance and stayed where they were to await assistance.”
The woman was taken to hospital where she is expected to make “a full recovery”.
