With voting in the federal election now complete, the electoral commission is preparing for the Northern Territory 2025 Local Government Elections.
Elections will be held in 15 of the 18 Territory local councils.
Voting is compulsory at all three levels of government in the Northern Territory. A failure to vote may result in a fine.
If you will be turning 18 on or before election day you can enrol now to vote in this year’s local government election
NT Electoral Commissioner Kirsten Kelly is encouraging ratepayers to make sure they are ready to have their say on their next local council representatives.
“Local councils are the closest level of government to the community, making decisions that shape everyday lives—from pools and sporting fields to roads and footpaths,” Ms Kelly said.
“If you’re 18 or over, make sure your enrolment is up to date and include your contact details so we can send you a reminder when it’s time to vote.”
Territorians have until 5pm on Tuesday 22 July to enrol or update their details on the Australian Electoral Commission website.
Voting options include early and mobile voting from Monday 11 August 2025, election day voting on Saturday 23 August 2025 and postal voting, with postal voting applications available from 23 May 2025.
