TASMANIA’S Best Cafe – as voted by you, our readers – is a favourite among diners and staff alike: North Hobart’s Born in Brunswick.
Owner Con Vailas said it’s incredible they’ve been voted in as best cafe after only months ago getting the gong for Tassie’s Best Brunch Spot, and thanked his longstanding staff for their efforts.
“Our staff are what keeps the place going – I’ve already given them the heads up I’ll be giving them some credit,” he said.
“Business is going great, we’re supper happy post-COVID, which was a bit of a concern.
“The locals are so good, I honestly can’t speak highly enough of the locals and the whole hospitality industry, they’ve stepped up to the plate.
“As much as we’re doing what we do, and we’re trying to do that the best we can, the community is equalling that and probably doing better and helping us out heaps.”
During the pandemic Born in Brunswick switched up to a more takeaway friendly menu: jaffles.
But their full menu is now back in swing, and some of the big hits with diners include a Tassie octopus and chorizo scrambled eggs with salsa verde and the orange and poppy seed hot cakes with condensed coconut ice cream and fresh berries.
Con said both meals are incredible – but describes the octopus and chorizo scramble as a “deluxe breakfast”.
“That’s what I would get if I went out to breakfast,” he laughed.
Testament to the cafe’s commitment to the community and their workers, Con gushed again about how none of the recognition would be possible without their staff and patrons.
“At the end of the day your business only operates because of our customers and staff – I can’t push that enough, I’m so big on thanking the people who make our business what it is,” he said.
“We are seriously thankful that they’ve pulled us through a pretty rough time.”
