A BRAND new Litchfield lookout has been damaged by visitors attempting to light a fire.
Pictures have revealed the extent of the damage to the Central Valley lookout in Litchfield National Park.
The Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security is calling for information as to who may have inflicted the destruction.
Top End Parks district manager Julie Heran said it was “disappointing” to have come across the scene.
“It is extremely disappointing to see that someone has tried to start a fire on the new lookout platform at Central Valley,” she said.
“It is such a stupid, unnecessary thing to do.”
Ms Heran said it was lucky the fire only scorched the platform.
“The platform was only opened to the public three weeks ago. It’s lucky the fire didn’t spread and risk the lives of those camping nearby,” she said.
She urged anyone to report any suspicious behaviour they may have witnessed to police.
