Parents and teachers at Driver Primary School will soon enjoy a smoother school run, with the Northern Territory Government announcing a $1.5 million upgrade to the school’s Kiss and Go zone and carpark.
Unveiled Thursday by Minister for Education, Training and Early Education, Jo Hersey, alongside local Member for Drysdale Clinton Howe and the beloved Hector the Road Safety Cat, the project aims to ease the chaotic traffic conditions at drop-off and pick-up times.
“The current set-up leads to long traffic jams, causing delays for parents and requiring teachers to come in early,” Member Howe said.
“We’re genuinely concerned about safety, and these upgrades will improve entryways, car parking spaces, and traffic flow within the school.”
School Principal Emma Hansen welcomed the announcement, highlighting the benefits for the school community, which has about 450 students.
Construction is expected to begin this year and wrap up in the first quarter of next year.
Mr Howe said the project was a key election commitment and something local families had been pushing for.
“I’m very proud that six months into government, we are delivering on this promise,” he said.
Currently, morning and afternoon congestion can see traffic jams last up to 30 minutes.
“It’s really just chaos,” Mr Howe said.
“Hopefully, this upgrade makes for much more relaxing mornings and afternoons for everyone.”
