Neo-western drama series, Territory, previously titled Desert King, is set to premiere in the coming months, with the Australian Netflix series bringing to life desert gangsters, cattle barons, and billionaire miners in an outback-themed epic.

On Thursday, Netflix released first-look images of the production and announced its cast for the highly-anticipated show.

Other cast members include Clarence Ryan, Dan Wyllie and Jay Ryan, with rising stars Philippa Northeast, Joe Klocek and Kylah Day also bringing their talent to the big screen.

Filmed across the Northern Territory and South Australia, the series will feature remote locations barely inhabited, with special permission having been granted by Traditional Owners to access the desert landscapes.

Recognisable locations include Kakadu National Park and Tipperary Station – a real life working station that has its own airfield and school.

Directed by Greg McLean, the series, set in the NT, focuses on the disputed Marianne Station, with warring desert gangsters, Indigenous elders, billionaire miners and cattle barons fighting over the billions of dollars at stake.

True to its outback setting, a number of Akubra hat wearing characters feature in the images released, with rifle and shotgun-wielding men and women traversing in Utes, buggies, helicopters and even on horseback.

Netflix director of content ANZ Que Minh Luu said the company was excited to feature the Territory.

“Territory is the ultimate tale of big land, big money and all the high-stakes drama that come with it,” she said.

“We’re excited to be shooting our next premium Australian series in the Northern Territory for the first time, where this epic family drama is set, and at the world-class production facilities in South Australia.”

Director of Screen Territory Jennie Hughes hailed the production as a massive win for the outback.

This is an ambitious Netflix series which could not have been made anywhere else but in the Territory.

“It captures the vastness, beauty and scale of the Territory, which is going to give this project an unparalleled sense of authenticity, aesthetic and audience appeal.”

The six-part series will premiere on October 24 on Netflix.
