Coronavirus: the state of our borders

THERE have been nearly 300,000 border crossings into the Northern Territory since our borders reopened six months ago in mid-July, new data shows.

Or, put another way, that figure represents about 50,000 more people than the entire 245,000-strong population of the NT — every man, woman and child.

The latest figures, updated on Friday morning, show 180,042 people have arrived by air, 105,063 have arrived by road and 3805 have arrived by sea or rail since July 17.

The figures include returning Territorians who may have crossed back into our borders multiple times.

The Territory borders re-opened to the rest of Australia on July 17.

Since then, a borders-for-hotspots policy has been in force.

The Territory has had 99 confirmed cases of COVID-19 but no community transmission.

There are now only five active cases, all of which were overseas-acquired.
