An elite group of just 48 students have received the news just after 9am this morning they have received an ATAR of 99.95.

Among them were students like Pymble Ladies College student Akina Li who said she couldn’t believe the news when she saw the magic 99.95 figure on her screen.

“It was such a surprise, it is this huge honour” she said.

“My teachers were really happy on my behalf, they sent me emails this morning congratulating me.”

She said while she had worked hard, in the days immediately before her exam she took time to do other things like playing the piano and baking.

“I feel like I have been preparing for years. In the actual days leading up to the exam, I just was stress baking and doing musical things. I play piano and the drum kit.”

She now hopes to study medicine at university next year.

A total of 54,894 students were eligible for an ATAR this year — 137 fewer than last year.

Among those achieving the perfect score, 15 were girls while 33 were boys.

This year 17 per cent of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or above and 50 per cent of students got above an ATAR of 70.

The median ATAR for females was 71.30 whereas the median ATAR for males was 68.70.

Another student Alan Wong from Sydney Boys High who got the magic 99.95 score on his phone could not believe it.

“I opened up the results at the gym this morning and I was shocked at the result – I didn’t expect it at all,” he said.

He said the switch to online learning part way through the year was tough but attributed his success to his tutors at Matrix Education.

“I was really lucky to have Matrix who were able to support my learning needs with their online courses and resources.”

Additionally he said consistency and a regular study routine helped achieve the stellar result.

“Focus on building the right habits early on before Year 12 and everything else comes naturally,” he said.
