A BAD hair day can bring down any prized pooch.
A crumpled coat is a competition no-no and matted fur would spell disaster.
Whether a colossal canine or a tiny terrier, the Royal Melbourne Show is a serious caper for the competition dogs and their owners.
A pomeranian called Arderne A Foreign Affair was a VIP — a very important pup — when he jetted into Melbourne from Townsville ahead of the competition.
He is pampered for more than eight hours in a competition week — time well spent after claiming the show’s award for best intermediate pomeranian.
But snatching a show award is about more than just looks — the pooch’s personality must match is perfectly preened coat.
Gentle giant Slick — a two-year-old great dane — won over the judges and claimed his best in breed gong by bounding around the show ring.
Owner Jasmin Briscoe said Slick was the “comedian of the giants”.
“The judges just love his personality,” she said.
“He barges his way into places he’s not allowed to go and if you tell him off he’ll wink at you.”
“He is really fun and is all about him but he does love everyone.”
