When Jane Harris moved into her new job, she made it her business to learn the names of all 500-odd locals, and stepped up their care during lockdown.

When Jane Harris moved into Admiralty Quays five years ago, she made it her business to learn the names of all 500-odd residents, something she achieved in less than a week.

It’s this personal approach to her job as the onsite residential manager of the Brisbane CBD high-rise that has made her a firm favourite with the neighbours.

She was nominated in the Thanks A Million campaign by one of them, Mary Place, for her care and devotion to all residents.

“Early on during the pandemic, Jane was very prompt in setting up processes for all the residents, owners and tenants,” Ms Place said.

“She knew who was isolating and who was still able to go out.

“She would pass on shopping lists to those able to shop in the days before Coles and Woolworths were delivering, and she emailed us lists and menus of nearby restaurants (that) were open and would deliver.”

There are 173 apartments, with residents ranging from babies through to a 95-year-old. And Ms Harris’s job is making sure everything works well in the building. When the COVID-19 statewide lockdown was instituted, Ms Harris made sure all residents, particularly the elderly ones, were all okay.

Ms Harris also created a Facebook page during the pandemic so that the residents could keep in touch with each other easily.

“During COVID-19 a lot of the elderly residents were too scared to go to the shops, there was a lot of uncertainty,” Ms Harris said.

“A few of the residents, including my daughters, put up their hands to get groceries for those who couldn’t go out.

“Quite a few older residents have family outside of Brisbane, so we stepped up to help them. Sometimes it was just a knock on the door to make sure things were okay, especially if I hadn’t seen one of them out and about.

“It’s such a beautiful, caring community we have. People would come up to me sometimes and say things like, ‘I haven’t seen Faye around, is she okay?’ so I’d go and check.”
