Revealed: Australians who have died in e-bike and e-scooter related incidents

Teenager Hudson Gagg is among the 38 Australians - including other Queenslanders - that have lost their lives in e-bike and e-scooter crashes. See the list of others.

Nearly 40 Australians have died in e-bike and e-scooter crashes in the past five years – some of them in circumstances involving intoxication, reckless riding, speeding and illegal modifications.

Pedal-assist e-bikes with a maximum power of 250 watts are generally compliant in most Australian states and territories, though rules vary, particularly for throttle-assisted or modified bikes.

Here are some of those who have lost their lives on e-rideables.

Burak Dogan

In April 2020, Burak Dogan was working as an Uber Eats delivery driver when he collided with a truck on Parramatta Road, in Sydney’s inner west, and died. Investigations later revealed he had been riding his e-bike in the truck’s blind spot, and a police report confirmed the driver of the truck was not at fault in any way.

Hudson Gagg

Seventeen-year-old Hudson Gagg died after the e-bike he was on collided with a Mitsubishi Outlander at Tallebudgera, Gold Coast, in September 2025.

David John Kirby, 86, died after he collided with a four-wheel drive while riding an electric bike on Perth’s Mitchell Freeway. He died at the scene. The car’s driver, Costantino Carmelo Mastrolembo, was found guilty of failing to stop and ensure assistance, and sentenced to four years jail in 2024. The judge made it clear she was not sentencing him for causing Mr Kirby’s death, as he had who been riding his bike illegally on the freeway.

In May 2025, Thanh Phan, 51, was walking through Perth’s city centre when he was struck by British tourist Alicia Kemp who was riding an e-scooter while heavily intoxicated. He suffered a brain bleed and died in hospital two days later. Ms Kemp pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death while under the influence of alcohol in August. She is yet to be sentenced.

Laura Wallace

Laura Wallace was riding a private e-scooter in Kambah, Canberra, when she fatally collided with a car in September 2022. The 19-year-old was thrown a “substantial distance” by the impact, and it was later confirmed by police she was not wearing a helmet. The matter was referred to the coroner with no charges laid.

Moustafa Abou-Eid

In September 2022, Moustafa Abou-Eid was travelling 50km/h – more than double the legal e-scooter limit – when he hit a speed bump in Pascoe Vale, Melbourne. The 28-year-old, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered critical injuries from the crash and died days later.

Nitin Haldipur Prabhu

Nitin Prabhu, 49, died from a brain injury sustained in an e-bike collision with another rider in Canterbury, Melbourne, in January 2024. Mr Prabhu’s bike had a top speed of 32km/h, above the legal limit. The coroner did not make a finding on whether either driver was at fault.

James Barella

While riding his electric unicycle on the Darebin Creek Trail in Bellfield, in Melbourne’s north, in February 2024, James Barella died after swerving to avoid cyclists. The 35-year-old is understood to have modified the vehicle to travel well above the standard 30 km/h.

Thirteen-year-old Ava Seculovic was struck by a car when crossing on her e-scooter at an intersection in Perth in March 2024. She suffered severe head injuries in the incident and died a week later in Perth Children’s Hospital. No charges were laid.

Gervis Wililo, 13, died after falling off his e-bike in Albion Park, near Wollongong, NSW, in June 2023. It is understood the teenager may have suffered a medical episode during the incident.

Lochlen Corcoran

Fifteen-year-old Lochlen Corcoran fell and hit his head while riding an e-scooter on a footpath in Yarrabilba, Queensland, in July 2022. He suffered critical injuries and later died.

Jaaden Abraham

Jaaden Abraham, 30, died after suffering catastrophic brain injuries from an e-bike crash in Byron Bay, NSW, in April 2024. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and the tradie died at Gold Coast Hospital days later.

Summah Richards, 12, was riding an e-scooter in Laidley, Queensland, when she fell in the path of a Holden Barina travelling in the same direction. The young girl died at the scene in April 2025. No charges have been laid.

Khye Brickell

Twelve-year-old Khye Brickell was riding an e-scooter at an intersection in Mill Park, Victoria, when he collided with a car in November 2024. He later died from his injuries. No charges were laid against the driver. The matter was referred to the coroner.

Jessie Van Der Draay

Jessie Van Der Draay, 32, was riding an electric scooter down the Great Western Highway in Lithgow, NSW, when she collided with a ute in March 2025. No charges have been laid and the matter has been referred to the coroner.

Reece Westle

In November 2023, motorcross champ Reece Westle, 37, crashed his electric bike into a power pole at Scarness, Queensland, and died.
