Police seeking answers after injured hitchhiker located next to river in Geelong

Police are searching for answers after a female hitchhiker was found with serious injuries next to a river.

Police are investigating after a woman was found on the side of a road with serious injuries overnight on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Barrabool Rd and Riverview Tce in the Geelong suburb of Belmont about 1am on Saturday.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the woman was located by a passerby and investigators had been told she was earlier seen hitchhiking along Barrabool Rd.

“She was transported to hospital with serious injuries and underwent surgery,” the spokeswoman said.

“At this stage it is unclear as to what has occurred or what led to the woman being found at the location.”

The stretch of Barrabool Rd where the woman was located runs alongside the Barwon River.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene on Saturday to assist investigators with how the woman sustained her injuries.
