A man has died after getting caught in a rip while swimming at a popular swimming spot in Queensland.

The 67-year-old had been swimming with his wife when they got into difficulty at Happy Valley beach, near Bulcock Beach in Caloundra, on the Sunshine Coast.

Emergency services were called at about 12.15pm on Friday.

Sunshine Coast chief lifeguard Trent Robinson said the man’s wife managed to make it back to shore but her husband tragically died.

Mr Robinson said the area was only surveilled by lifeguards on school holidays and weekends.

He said swimmers should go to Bulcock and Kings Beach which were patrolled by lifeguards.

“Even though it’s a 300m to 400m walk, we recommend making that walk and to swim between the flags,” Mr Robinson told the Courier Mail.

A woman in her 50s was taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
