A man and a teenager have been charged over the “fatal unintentional discharge” of a firearm after a nine-year-old boy was shot and killed at a property in regional NSW.
The boy died after he was accidentally shot at the property in Windellama, near Goulburn, a police spokesperson said.
Emergency services were called to a Fernleigh Close property about 11.20am on Sunday after receiving reports of a shooting.
The boy was treated for serious neck injuries by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.
Police established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the incident under Strike Force Dalzeill.
A 14-year-old boy and a 33-year-old man were later arrested and taken to Goulburn Police Station.
The teen has since been charged with possess unauthorised firearm and granted conditional bail to appear before a children’s court on April 16.
The adult male was charged with allowing an unauthorised person to possess a firearm and not keep firearm safely and will appear before Goulburn Local Court on May 14.
Windellama has a population of 413 people, according to the 2021 census, with about 100 families and 316 private dwellings.
Goulburn state MP Wendy Tuckerman called the incident a “terrible tragedy”, The Daily Telegraph reported.
“This is an absolute terrible tragedy and my heartfelt condolences go to the family involved,” Ms Tuckerman told the masthead.
She added it would be “inappropriate” for her to comment further as an investigation was underway.
