NSW police given new powers to crack down on drug offenders

Five alleged drug dealers with hundreds of MDMA pills were arrested by police at a hardcore dance festival in Sydney on Saturday night.

The five men were among 19 people found with drugs at the Show Your True Colours rave at Sydney Olympic Park, police allege.

The event was promoted by I Am Hardstyle and Harder Styles United, the latter of which is the same company which promoted last December’s Knockout Games of Destiny where teenager Callum Brosnan, 19, died after a suspected overdose.

Police charged 24-year-old Jake Hunter with drug supply and resisting arrest after he was allegedly caught with 160 MDMA pills at the event.

Benjamin Au-Yeung, 18, was also charged with drug supply after he was allegedly found with 107 MDMA.

Another three men, two aged 19 and the other 21, were charged with drug supply and possessing prohibited drugs.

They were granted conditional bail and will appear in court at later dates.

Fourteen people were issued field court attendance notices for drug possession, 19 were kicked out for being intoxicated and 40 people were refused entry.

Nineteen underage teenagers were also refused entry after trying to get in using fake IDs.

They were collected from the venue by their parents or carers.

NSW Police Superintendent Michael Rochester slammed festival goers allegedly caught with drugs at the event.

“These results show that if you are intent on bringing drugs to music festivals, you will be caught and dealt with accordingly,” he said.

“We want people to enjoy themselves and be safe at these events, not risk their health and wellbeing.”
