Barnaby Joyce and Vikki Campion have shared the first photo of their new son Tom, much to the delight of his grandparents up in Queensland.

Tom Joyce’s birth on Saturday night has been the subject of plenty of media interest in recent days, although nowhere near as intense as his big brother Sebastian in April last year.

Former firefighter Peter Campion said he and his wife were thrilled to welcome a new member to their family.

He suggested the couple should not stop at just two babies, since three was such a nice, round number.

“Tracey and I are proud grandparents, Vikki and Baanyard (nickname) are delighted, and the boys are just beautiful,” he said.

“They may well grow up to be a real force of nature. Especially if there just happened to be another one …”

Mr Campion famously suggested Mr Joyce should “give himself an uppercut” when he learnt about his daughter’s affair and baby with the then-deputy prime minister last year.

He has since come to a kind of begrudging respect with the father of his grandson.

The baby is named after Mr Joyce’s grandfather, Thomas.

Tom is believed to have been born at Armidale public hospital, like his brother Sebastian.

Mr Joyce also has four daughters from his marriage with now estranged wife Natalie.

The New England MP resigned as deputy prime minister and Nationals leader early last year after revelations surfaced of his affair with Ms Campion.

Ms Campion, a former journalist and deputy chief of staff at The Daily Telegraph, left Mr Joyce’s office in April 2017 to work for one of Mr Joyce’s closest colleagues, Resources Minister Matt Canavan.

Recently, Mr Joyce weathered the backlash from his public marriage breakdown to pull off a thumping victory in his rural seat of New England at the federal election.

A small swing was recorded in Mr Joyce’s favour since the last general, when he was still married to his first wife Natalie.

“50 per cent of people go through divorces. A lot of people thought: ‘That could be me you’re talking about’,” Mr Joyce said.
