It’s perhaps the most iconic line in Australian cinema, but according to a man with a billion dollars business, Fred Schebesta, Michael Caton has a lot to answer for in uttering that fateful quote from The Castle: “Tell him he’s dreaming”.
Mr Schebesta, 43, founded personal finance comparison website finder.com with friends Jeremy Cabral and Frank Restuccia.
Not content to stop there, he is now a growing presence in the world of cryptocurrency.
The Sydney Grammar graduate posted an intriguing take on Australians and their comparative lack of global success on his LinkedIn page on Friday which immediately resonated with his many followers.
“It’s time for Australians to embrace American culture of audacious dreams,” Mr Schebesta said.
“You can’t easily teach Australians the mindset of dreaming big. In some cultures like America, it’s ingrained from birth.
“Many Australians dismiss the risk-takers as fake or delusional. “Tell him he’s dreaming”.
“In the US, the pursuit of individual greatness isn’t a distant ideal; it’s a tangible reality that Americans witness throughout their lives.”
Mr Schebesta, who grew up in Sydney’s northern beaches and now calls an iconic beachside mansion in Coogee affectionately known as the Crypto Castle home, said Aussies need to start believing in themselves the way Americans do.
“The secret to exceptional success? Grand visions,” the eclectic billionaire said.
“You need to believe in your monumental goals before anyone else does. By the time others catch on, you’ve already made it happen – their recognition is no longer essential.
“In Australia, we’re often conditioned to be satisfied with the ordinary. Our institutions reinforce a predictable path: complete school, get good grades, go to uni, land a good-paying job and hold onto it. That’s the script we’ve been handed.
“For Australians, revolution is something we read about in history books. For Americans, it’s the very foundation of their identity.”
The response to the thought provoking post was immediate.
“We need to grow taller poppies,” eCommerce and crypto investor Tom Threlfall wrote.
“To build the Twitter we wished we had,” futurist Dr Mark van Rijmenam added.
Mr Schebesta made his fortune helping first Australians and later the world compare everything from mobile phone plans to insurance.
Finder recently hit the headlines after partnering with Olympic break dancer Rachael “RayGun” Gunn on an advertising campaign.
