United Australia Party leader Clive Palmer is recovering after he was rushed to hospital following a bad fall from a stage while preparing for his campaign launch event.

The 68-year-old billionaire mining magnate was left with a nasty gash on his head after he slipped and landed awkwardly while rehearsing the campaign launch at his Coolum resort on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on Friday.

First aid was administered immediately and Mr Palmer was transported to hospital where he was later discharged.

On Saturday he told The Courier Mail what led to the fall.

“Well I went to jump on the stage and I can’t high jump like I used to,” Mr Palmer revealed.

“I hit it and ricocheted off the stage and hit my head … I was knocked out for about 20 seconds. Had a scan.

“ I really do have a brain in there between my two ears.”

Mr Palmer said the incident reminded him of his time playing sport in his younger years.

“It took me back to my old days when I played for Southport Tigers rugby league … when I came to, I looked around to see who’d tackled me,” he said.

Mr Palmer spent Saturday resting before attending his official campaign launch.

The fall on Friday was Mr Palmer’s second stumble in recent weeks.

While appearing at the National Press Club in Canberra he stumbled on stage but managed to avoid a serious fall or injury.

In February Mr Palmer, who is unvaccinated against Covid, was taken to Pindara Hospital after he contracted the virus.

A team of US-based specialists who treated Donald Trump were called in to help Mr Palmer and he claims they fast-tracked him on to a US drug trial which included a mix of antivirals that included ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine.

Neither of the drugs have been approved by health authorities to treat Covid in Australia.
