A candidate for Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party has been granted bail just days before the federal election.

Ingram Spencer, the UAP’s candidate for Higgins in Melbourne’s inner southeast, has been held in custody since April 27 as he faces 13 charges, including using a carriage service to harass.

He was granted bail at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after earlier stating he was in “no position” to attend legal proceedings following his arrest and imprisonment.

“I was arrested, stripped naked, kept in solitary confinement,” he said.

“I was in no position to prepare for any kind of a court proceeding or even formulate my argument.”

Mr Spencer said he intended to plead not guilty to the charges which were laid after police alleged he exhibited “aggressive” behaviour.

Earlier this month Mr Spencer’s former lawyer, Tony Hargreaves, told a court his client refused to leave his cell.

“Despite my attempts … he will not come out of his cell and is non-communicative,” Mr Hargreaves said.

“He simply rolls over and won’t come out of his cell.”

On Wednesday, Mr Spencer told the court he wanted to appeal his charges in the High Court.

“You’re not appealing anything Mr Spencer, this is a bail application,” Magistrate Martin Grinberg said.

The political candidate is standing in the blue-ribbon seat of Higgins which is held by Liberal member Dr Katie Allen.

The father of one describes himself as a “fighter” who is horrified by “the globalist’s attack on humanity” according to the UAP website.

Mr Spencer will face Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on June 15.
