There was a meltdown over Jenny Morrison’s election night dress

If Scott Morrison had have been victorious Jenny Morrison’s wardrobe choice would have been a boss move. Instead, it backfired spectacularly.

Jenny Morrison has stunned in a teal-coloured dress that raised eyebrows among eagle-eyed social media users who couldn’t help but notice the irony.

The wife of outgoing Prime Minister Scott Morrison wore a Carla Zampatti dress in front of supporters as her husband conceded defeat to Labor’s Anthony Albanese on Saturday night.

While that by itself is not unusual, it is when you consider that the Liberals largely lost the election in a so-called “teal” bloodbath led by independents sporting light blue colours.

Among those was independent Allegra Spender from the eastern Sydney seat of Wentworth, who booted out Liberal MP Dave Sharma.

Ironically, Carla Zampatti is Allegra Spender’s late mother.

Labor’s Jason Clare claimed “the teals are eating the Liberal Party alive” and social media predictably went into a frenzy over the dress.

National fashion editor for Nine newspapers Melissa Singer noted that the dress was called “the celebration dress” on Carla Zampatti’s website.

Billionaire Atlassian founder Mike Cannon-Brookes took to social media to congratulate Jenny on the dress.

“(Clap) for Jenny standing up in teal - for Allegra Spender and for all the incredible women who changed Australia tonight,” he wrote.

Morrison’s election defeat was capped by a speech where he said he “accepted” Australia’s verdict.

“Tonight, I have spoken to the Leader of the Opposition and the incoming Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese. And I’ve congratulated him on his election victory this evening,’ he said alongside his wife Jenny and daughters,” he said.

“I have always believed in Australians and their judgment and I’ve always been prepared to accept their verdicts.

“And tonight they have delivered their verdict and I congratulate Anthony Albanese and the Labor Party and I wish him and his government all the very best.”

An emotional Mr Albanese later took to the stage at his own event amid chants of “Albo, Albo”, and immediately thanked Australia for the “extraordinary honour”.

“Tonight the Australian people have voted for change. I am humbled by this victory. And I am honoured to be given the opportunity to serve as the 31st Prime Minister of Australia,” he said.

“My Labor team will work every day to bring Australians together. And I will lead a government worthy of the people of Australia. A government as courageous and hardworking and caring as the Australian people are themselves.”

He thanked Mr Morrison for his “gracious” congratulations and for his service, before acknowledging his own humble beginnings.

“My fellow Australians, it says a lot about our great country that a son of a single mum who was a disability pensioner, who grew up in public housing down the road in Camperdown, can stand before you tonight as Australia’s Prime Minister,” he said.
