Jenny Morrison impresses Queensland MP during Scott’s visit to Cairns darts club

Scott Morrison was thrown into a ‘circle of wisdom’ at a Cairns darts club and grilled by locals, but it was his wife Jenny that stole the show.

Scott Morrison’s election campaign ramped up on Monday as he was thrown into a “circle of wisdom” in far north Queensland.

A whirlwind day of travel with his wife Jenny began at a a display home centre in Brisbane, where he lumbered over a model village and spoke about how excited he was about the growth of the area.

He was then given a roasting in the Queensland humidity about his new super for housing policy that saw him tell one reporter to “calm down” several times.

However, there was a change of pace when he arrived at a darts club in the state’s far north later that day.

News.com.au arrived in the Cairns venue with a travelling press pack, and elderly locals were sipping on tea in the sweltering heat as they quietly waited for the Prime Minister to arrive.

Dart boards, each sponsored by local businesses, lined the walls of the sparsely furnished hall and retirees looked puzzled by the sudden influx of dozens of journalists and cameramen.

“There must be a lot of ladies from Melbourne here because everyone looks pasty,” mused one of the locals as the press pack set up.

Retired Cairns Council head engineer Graeme Haussmann was among the chattering crowd and told news.com.au about how he only had one year left to drive because of his worsening eyesight, and he was going to ensure he enjoyed his final few months on the road.

Other retirees pitched in to tell him he’d be fine, insisting driverless cars would be here in a couple of years and he’d be back on the road in no time.

When asked about Mr Morrison, the octogenarians appeared to be ambivalent towards the Prime Minister.

“I thought that he was going to be a good guy because he stopped the bloody boats,” said Mr Haussmann. “Now we’ve got to stop the Chinese and how are we going to do that?”

When news.com.au asked others whether they liked Mr Morrison they said “yes and no” or that they’re “not sure”.

Mr Morrison then arrived to warm reception and he was given an introduction by the member for Leichhardt Warren Ensch.

Mr Ensch was particularly pleased to see Mrs Morrison.

“What a bonus,” he said. “You’re way better looking than your husband.”

Mr Morrison was then welcomed into the “circle of wisdom” in which members of the club sat around and chatted with him.

The Prime Minister made a couple of local announcements, and came dangerously close to getting a bullseye before he was promptly whisked away to his next location - rumoured to be Darwin.

To support our rural workforce in the budget the Morrison government made an investment of $99.3 million, to boost training and education opportunities in rural regions.

Today it was announced this $99.3 million budgeted commitment will increase by 80 the number of medical Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) available at rural campuses.

It is said this will give more Australians the opportunity to study and become a doctor in rural areas, which has been shown to lead to doctors staying in and practising in rural areas.

The PM announced that JCU Cairns will be a priority institution for these CSPs due to their “highly successful End to End Training Pipeline Model” which offers students a full six year university course in medical science.
