How to watch second leaders’ debate live on Sunday

The second leaders’ debate of the election will get under way on Sunday night. This is how you watch Morrison and Albanese go head-to-head.

Election 2022: Highlights from the first leaders’ debate

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese will go head-to-head again in the second leaders’ debate of the election on Sunday night in Sydney.

The leaders of Australia’s two major parties will take questions from a panel of three journalists in an hour-long airing starting 8.30pm (AEST) at Channel 9’s Sydney studio.

It will be broadcast on Channel 9’s main free-to-air channel and will be also available to stream on Nine Now.

Mr Albanese was declared the winner of the first debate held in Brisbane last month. Of the 100 voters in the audience, 40 went with the Labor leader, 35 backed Mr Morrison, while 25 remained undecided.

Mr Albanese opened the first debate saying Australia “can have a better future if we have a better government”, talking about the need to lift wages to meet rising cost of living, to bring manufacturing back on-shore powered by “clean energy”, and to establish a federal anti-corruption commission.

“This government has been in office for almost a decade, the truth is they haven‘t learnt from their mistakes, they don’t have a plan for the future,” he said.

“This was the debate that could’ve ended Albanese’s campaign if he stuffed up like he'd stuffed up the first week of the campaign,” political commentator Andrew Bolt said.

“I don't think there was any major stuff-ups from either of them… there wasn't any knockout blows either,” Sky host Peta Credlin commented.

The pair will square off again in a third leaders’ debate a few days later on Wednesday, May 11.

The event will be aired by Channel 7 and hosted by the network’s political editor Mark Riley. With Channel 7’s broadcast just 10 days before the election, it is unlikely there will be another opportunity for the leaders to go head to head.

The first debate attracted more than 415,000 viewers across Sky News’ subscription and online services, with the viewer count expected to rise in the upcoming two debates on free-to-air.

Requests by the ABC to host a debate between the leaders have not yet been granted, despite the public broadcaster putting the call out to both parties.

“The ABC invites leaders of the main political parties to take part in a debate every federal election and 2022 is no exception,” the ABC said in a statement.

A little bit has transpired since the pair last met. Scott Morrison is expected to grill Albanese over a number of press conference slip-ups, while the Labor leader will continue to target the Prime Minister over the cost of living and clean energy.
