Exclusive: Australians are expected to drink three times more bubbles on New Year’s Eve than other day of the year, as the nation’s top champagne-drinking suburbs have been revealed.

Millions of glasses will be raised to welcome in the New Year with almost 200,000 bottles of bubbles expected to be sold on New Year’s Eve alone, by just by one retailer, according to Coles Liquor general manager Mia Lloyd.

Of those, 26,000 will be champagne and 163,000 bottles will be sparkling wine – an increase of 317 per cent compared to the daily average sales for year.

“This year we’ve seen sparkling wine sales grow to be five times the amount of champagne as more customers look to enjoy bubbles on a budget,” Ms Lloyd said.

Coles Liquor, which includes First Choice Liquor Market, Vintage Cellars and Liquorland, has revealed the top 10 suburbs for New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia that will pop the most champagne bottles this New Year’s Eve.

Residents in Waterloo, NSW, Kenmore, QLD, Brighton, VIC, Victor Harbour, SA and Halls Head, WA, were the listed as the biggest champagne drinkers for their respective states.

They were followed by Maroubra, Southport, Sorrento, Malvern and Subiaco, respectively.

The taste for champagne appears to extend beyond the wealthy, with many middle and working-class suburbs featured in the extended list.

Mumm, Moet & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot are popular, Ms Lloyd said.

Andrew Sheddon, Head of Fine Wine at Endeavour Group, which owns Dan Murphy’s and BWS, said those brands were also popular among its customers who “still in love with champagne”.

“But there’s growing interest in smaller producers such as Philipponnat, AR Lenoble and Delamotte. This tells us people are excited to discover new wines from the region and are willing to try something different,” he said.

“Non-vintage Champagne continues to drive the majority of the sales volume but we are seeing good growth in our premium brands and across vintage expressions specifically showing that customers are still willing to treat themselves.”

Other popular bubbles include Chandon sparkling, Sensi prosecco and Yellowglen, Ms Lloyd said.

Canard-Duchêne ambassador Nikki Phillips said champagne was the perfect drink to toast in the new year.

“Champagne is the symbol of celebration. Popping a bottle at midnight and raising a glass to the year that was and the new year ahead is a tradition for many.” she said.

The model said compared to years gone by, her NYE celebrations were “quiet” these days and planned to mark the occasion with her kids.

“We will always try and get a spot to watch the early fireworks and then home to entertain with games and sparklers with friends. After which, it turns to an adult game of who can stay awake till midnight,” she joked.
