EVER driven down Brinsmead Kamerunga Rd and wondered about the story behind a mysterious dwelling on the corner shrouded behind a curtain of fig tree vegetation?

Stories of unmarked graves, paranormal apparitions and just a straight out creepy feeling have all been associated with the house that lies just a stone’s throw from the old Smithfield Cemetery in Stewarts Rd.

The house on Stewarts Rd was built in 1952 and has been abandoned for many years.

Built in 1952 the house lies on land which leads south to the Barron River which until 1971 was farmed by the Stewart brothers.

The old farmstead now lies abandoned, while the history of the property and how it fell into disrepair has captured the imagination of many.

After driving past for years wondering about the house, Jayde Casey finally dared to tread where many would never have the nerve.

She described walls covered in graffiti and rooms strewn with personal paperwork including old family photos.

“There was graffiti on the wall saying get out and ‘F’ off, so not sure it was someone playing games or not,” she said.

From the ceiling fan hung a rope with a noose tied at the end and under it a chair lay on its side. I didn’t see anything out of the corner of my eye and nothing moved by itself but I did get a very eerie feeling. “

An eerie feeling she shares with Meredith Pye, who after years of being intrigued by the Stewarts Rd house, plucked up the courage one night last year and went to check it out.

She managed to capture an image of what appears to be a small flash of light or object floating in the frame.

“I took four photos in a row (and the object) popped up on the last one. I put it up on a paranormal site and got told to not go there without spiritual protection,” she said.

“I have watched a lot of ghost adventure shows on TV but but I don’t know how to describe it.”

“I get a bad feeling and I want to know more but I know it’s not good thing to get into. “It has so much history which can attract things and abandoned places can attract spirits.

“I sense there is something there and it’s not good,” she said.

Others in response to a question on Facebook inquiring about the house said the original house was pulled down and was rebuilt after the woman of the old Queenslander planted fig trees too close to the house and there are whispers a woman committed suicide in the house.

According to RP Data, the Mann family own the house and adjoining 13ha block at 14 Stewarts Rd Barron.

The consortium also owns number 51, 40 and 54 on Stewarts Rd.

Out the front of the house is a long broken down old Land Cruiser and a peek over the fence reveals a cream-coloured two-storey weatherboard dwelling.

Tamika Young said she remembers “messing around” at the house with some friends.

“(We) heard growling and saw a red light inside the house start flashing quickly.

“Safe to say we Usain Bolted back into the car and skedaddled,” she said.

“I felt the hairs stand up on the back of my neck and slept with the light on for a few weeks.”

While most were fascinated and freaked out by the house, there are those that after hearing of it’s spookiness felt a compulsion to visit.

Margaret Hickey said “I am quite happy to look into it, and make my own mind up on this one”. For anyone thinking about checking it out local paranormal investigator Kylie Campbell had this warning.

“We can’t have kids chasing ghosts on remote land, we can’t have the inexperienced messing with the unknown,” she said.
