$49 flights: Virgin Australia slashes one million airfares for one week

Virgin Australia has slashed more than one million airfares for one week only in a network-wide sale, with prices as low as $49. See where you could go.

Potential spike in airline competition could lead to ‘improved services’

With summer just around the corner, Australians can plan their holidays and save money during a peak travel time coinciding with the school holidays, Christmas, New Year’s and Easter.

Virgin Australia’s latest network-wide sale slashes ticket prices on one million fares to as low as $49, for one week only.

The applicable destinations are perfect for a getaway, whether it’s to Bali or Byron Bay, Hobart or Hamilton Island.

The sale starts now and goes until midnight AEST 28 October 2024 on select flights for travel between 25 November 2024 and 30 June 2025 (unless sold out prior).

“We are encouraging Aussies to get in early and snap up a bargain fare to amazing holiday destinations such as Queenstown, Bali, Fiji and domestic hotspots like Hamilton Island, Perth and Gold Coast from just $49 one-way,” Virgin Australia Executive, Libby Minogue said.

“It is not often our entire network is on sale and we are committed to delivering great value fares so Australians can experience the wonders of Australia and our international destinations.”

Business class fares are included in the sale.

The sale comes after recent data from Wotif showing that Aussies are swapping seasons to save money on travel when they go on holiday.

The ongoing cost of living crisis is pushing Aussies to be more flexible about when they take a break, or to seek out better-value domestic destinations for their holidays.

Nearly half (40 per cent) of Aussies would travel in the off season to save on their holiday.

For example, travelling off-season can mean saving up to 22 per cent on accommodation in Cairns, up to 30 per cent in Byron Bay, and up to 22 per cent in Launceston.

Another 41 per cent are looking for good value accommodation with free inclusions, 23 per cent are cutting back on the length of their holiday and 22 per cent are avoiding more popular destinations.
