‘Completely unexpected’: Police taken by ‘surprise’ in ‘bizarre’ Wieambilla shooting

The shockwaves of an execution-style ambush in Queensland on Monday that left six people dead – including two police officers – have reached the Territory, with NT politicians and cops expressing their grief over the tragedy.

Constable Rachel McCrow, 29, and Constable Matthew Arnold, 26, were murdered in cold blood at a property at Wieambilla, south of Chinchilla, about 4.40pm Monday after responding to a missing persons inquiry instigated by New South Wales Police.

Neighbour Alan Dare was also shot and killed by the armed offenders, who were wearing camouflage.

Three suspects, Gareth Train, his brother Nathaniel, a former Queensland school principal, who had been the subject of the missing persons notice by New South Wales Police, and Gareth’s wife Stacey Train were killed in a police firefight late Monday night.

Constable Rachel McCrow, 26, and Constable Matthew Arnold, 29, were gunned down at the property in the western Darling Downs, about three hours west of Brisbane.

On Tuesday, condolences were offered by senior Territory politicians and the NT’s police union.

Northern Territory Police Association president Paul McCue, who has offered the union’s support to the Police Federation of Australia, said the shooting was the “greatest of tragedies”.

“Not only did two young officers lose their lives in a callous, calculated and cold-blooded attack, but the members who helped recover their bodies and bring an end to the siege will carry those scars for the rest of their lives,” he said in a statement.

“This incident highlights the volatile, dangerous nature of policing, and the bravery of every police officer who puts on their uniform every day not knowing what they’ll face.

“This harrowing incident will have a deep, widespread impact on police officers right across the country and we are doing everything we can to support our members through this difficult and challenging time.”

Police Minister Kate Worden took to social media, offering her condolences in a post accompanied by a picture of a police blue ribbon.

“Our police put their safety on the line to protect the rest of us but no one should lose their lives just for doing their job,” Ms Worden said.

“My thoughts are with Queensland police for the loss of their colleagues, with those officers’ loved ones, and with our broader police family who will be affected by these events.”

Blain MLA, former cop and police negotiator Mark Turner said he was “absolutely devastated” at the news.

“They’re just so young,” Mr Turner said.
