Mixed use development approved near Domain Precinct
While the proposal was approved, a Townsville City councillor was concerned the precinct was increasingly contradicting the planning scheme.

Townsville City Council has decided to override its planning scheme to allow an extension to the Domain Precinct in Garbutt with an additional low impact industrial and boutique commercial development.
Three buildings have been approved with a total space of 2764 square metres in 37 Greg Jabs Drive, next to Harvey Norman.
According to the development applicant it will be a “mixed use development” which will operate as a commercial centre and would provide opportunities for tenancies considered unavailable elsewhere.
“The purpose is to create a pocket of mixed use development that takes advantage of the site’s proximity to the Garbutt Specialised Centre by providing for a mixture of development that includes service industry and low impact industry uses, as well as compatible business uses at a scale that does not compromise the viability or function of the centre or the greater centre’s hierarchy,” the development plan said.
Councillor Kurt Rehbein voted against the proposal and said the council needed to have a discussion on the future plans for the Domain Precinct.
It was an industrial area but the precinct was increasingly becoming more commercial.
“This being on the corner starts stepping outside that realm in my view and my opinion, that’s the reason for my concern,” he said.
“However, we’ve already got drivethroughs going in Domain and a shopping centre that’s popped up, it’s going away from what’s in our activities centre plan for Domain while it was all about warehouses and supporting that warehouse function.
“Now we’re getting more into a commercial space in various forms.”
