Police have confirmed new details surrounding a truck driver’s death in a remote highway tragedy.

Investigators found the truck driver was killed after exiting his stationary vehicle and being struck by the attached trailer earlier this month.

No other vehicles were involved.

NT WorkSafe has opened an inquiry into the incident.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 10km east of the Victoria River Roadhouse about 5.15pm on March 23.

Police received a report saying the man was trapped underneath the truck’s trailer.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Police said the death was not suspicious and Katherine police were investigating, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.

A St John Ambulance NT spokeswoman said a CareFlight helicopter also attended the scene.

Police are calling for any witnesses, particularly those with dashcam footage, who may have seen a truck and trailer pulled over on the Victoria Hwy near the Victoria River Roadhouse to call police on 131 444 and quote reference number 10295434.

The incident brings the Territory’s road toll to three, compared to 12 this time last year.
