LONG serving Nightcliff captain Ingvar Dyrting says a Tiger triumph in Saturday night’s NTFL Grand Final would be a monumental achievement.
Dyrting captained the Tigers for six seasons in his 201-game career through the 1990s and noughties, falling agonisingly short in pursuit of a premiership but remembering his time at PSC BM Oval with a lot of pride at what he achieved.
“We played finals football, but only made a grand final once (2004) and I didn’t play in that one because of hockey commitments,’’ Dyrting said.
“But this is a pretty strong Nightcliff side right across the board. I think they’ll make their own history by winning the flag and going back-to-back because it’s always a different side from the year before.
“The blokes that did not play in last year’s premiership will be looking for their own piece of it, so it’s entirely up to them what result they get.’’
Dyrting concedes St Mary’s have become a “bit of a bogey side’’ for his old club this season with wins in the minor round and the major semi-final.
“They’ve had some success against this particular side, including two weeks ago in the major semi and it’s why Nightcliff has to stick their processes and game plan,’’ he said.
“That basically means playing the way they normally do with to focusing on the final outcome and what they can do well.
“I think it’s sort of fortunate they played Saints two weeks ago and they’ll know what their opponents will bring to the table and how they can counteract it.’’
Dyrting watched his old side outplay and outrun Southern Districts in the preliminary final with what he described as the “perfect team performance’’.
“While there’s obviously some great players in the side, it was the team effort that stood out where everyone played their roles very well,’’ he said.
“It certainly stood out to the point where it would be pretty hard to poke a hole in an area Nightcliff might fall down in.’’
