Replay: CDRL Mossman-Port Douglas v Brothers A-Grade Grand Final

A Devante Heron hat trick has taken Brothers to the promised land, fighting back to claim a 26-24 triumph over Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks to win their first CDRL A-grade premiership in a decade.

Two of Heron’s tries came within six minutes amidst a powerful Brothers fightback, but it wasm’t until Tye Smith crossed in the 73rd minute the Brothers could afford to dream.

The Sharks led 24-12 at one point, as their electrifying back line and hardworking forwards set the pace and put their side on top.

But this Brothers team was made of something dfiferent.

Led around the park by Jordan Biondi-Odo, Brothers conjured a comeback for the ages to claim the 24th premiership in their history.

Sharks co-captain Davin Crampton was sinbinned with 15 minutes to go and when Heron crossed two minutes later, Brothers could smell victory.

Smith levelled the score seven minutes later, before Falcon Peni kicked the conversion to give his team the premiership.

Brothers lock Nicholas Harold capped a massive season at Brothers by claiming player of the grand final honours for his workhorse efforts in the middle of the field.

Reserve Grade - Brothers v Innisfail

Replay: CDRL Brothers v Innisfail Leprechauns Reserve Grade Grand Final

Brothers have stormed from behind with three tries in as many minutes to overturn a seven-point halftime deficit and win the CDRL Reserve Grade grand final.

Innisfail led 19-12 at the break after controlling much of the first half, hitting back to take a lead after an early Cameron Hooker try put Brothers on the board in the second minute.

A Michael Morton field goal just before half time handed Leprechauns the advantage at the break, before Brothers broke open the grinding second half.

They struck quickly - Peter Tuccandidgee crossed in the 57th minute before Philemon Eseli (60th) and Isaac Cygler (63th) handed Brothers a lead they would not surrender.

Morton was sin binned for a swinging arm in the final 10 minutes, and while Simon Asela crossed for the Leprechauns in the finals minute, it was not enough.

Brothers’ 28-23 win made them the first on grand final day to turn a minor premiership into grand final glory, and handed Luke Fleming his first win as a captain-coach.

Fleming capped his season by being named Player of the Grand Final.

Under-18s grand final - Atherton v Kangaroos

Replay: CDRL Atherton Roosters v Kangaroos Under-18s Grand Final

Atherton Roosters have stormed to the CDRL under-18s premiership after a crushing 34-16 win against Kangaroos.

Hooker Tait Coghlan scored twice while Roosters halves Jhidan Dikes and Aiden Carson led their side around Barlow Park with distinction.

Prop Jackson Fahlstrom and backrower Kaleb Nielsen also produced huge performances for the Roosters, as they refused to allow Kangaroos any room to move or gain momentum.

Atherton overcame an early deficit to take control, with two tries in as many minutes giving them a 12-4 lead after 15 minutes - one they never surrendered.

It was the second straight year Kangaroos made the decider, but it would be a second consecutive season in which they would be denied on the grandest stage.

Coghlan was named player of the grand final for his performance.

Women’s grand final - Edmonton v Kangaroos

Replay: CDRL Kangaroos v Edmonton Storm Women's Grand Final

Edmonton have caused a boilover to claim the CDRL Women’s premiership.

Kangaroos entered the grand final at Barlow Park having not lost a game all season and claiming the minor premiership by 10 points on the back of their outstanding defensive record.

But the Storm simply would not be denied, with former Maroons Origin and Indigesnous All Stars representative Stephanie Mooka leading her side to a 28-16 victory.

Mooka was sensational for the Storm.

She finished the day with two tries and three goals for half of her team’s points, saved three or four tries with her defensive work, and came up with several big plays to be a worthy recipient of Player of the Grand Final.

PREVIEW: Glory on the line in thrilling grand final match-ups

It all comes down to this.

On Saturday, September 24, the premiership winners of the 2022 Cairns District Rugby League competitions will be crowned after four blockbusting clashes at Barlow Park.

Minor premiers Mossman-Port Douglas will take on Brothers in the A-grade decider, putting a modern dominator of the competition against a historic club in the midst of a decade-long premiership drought.

The Sharks smashed Brothers 58-16 in the major semi final on September 11, their third and biggest win against the Stan Williams Park club this season.

Led by Coach of the Year Joel Marama, the Sharks recorded the best attack in the competition - 716 points in 18 games, an astonishing 39.7 points per game - on their way to the minor premiership.

It was an annihilation that took may by surprise, but gifted the minor premiers another week off to get their bodies right and finalise preparation for the 80 minutes - or more - which matter most.

Brothers bounced back well to eliminate Ivanhoes, overcoming a slow start and 12-point halftime deficit to beat the Knights 38-24 in the preliminary final.

They won’t be able to give away that much of a lead against the Sharks, and coach Jordan Biondi-Odo will be desperate to ensure his troops aren’t blown off the park in the decider.

Long-time Cairns rugby league rivals Brothers and Kangaroos have the chance to win two premierships.

Brothers will contest the A-grade and reserve grade deciders, while Kangaroos have teams in the under-18s and women’s grand finals.

The action will kick-off with the women’s clash at noon, with games kicking off every two hours to allow for extra time and presentations.
