Brothers pulled off a nervy two-point victory over aarch rivals Kangaroos to maintain their lead at the top of the Cairns Rugby League A Grade ladder.

Kangaroos looked likely to pull off a massive upset when they led 24-20 with just three minutes left.

But a sweeping attacking move proved decisive as Brothers scored a converted try.

A new chapter will be written in one of the oldest and grandest rivalries in the Cairns District Rugby League when Brothers host Kangaroos in the match of the round.

The fixture always has plenty of feeling, and Kangaroos will know they are in hostile territory when Brothers’ Old Boys find their voices.

The Stan Williams Park clash is also the reunion date for Brothers’ premierships ending in the year ‘2’, including A-grade triumphs in 2012 and 2002.

But there will be extra emotion in this clash, after the passing of long-serving Brothers volunteer John Bingham.

In A-grade, it’s a clash between a joint league leader and a club on the cusp of the top five.

Kangaroos are chasing a third straight win after dispatching Tully and Edmonton is successive weeks, with two valuable competition points to keep them in the hunt for finals.

Brothers are chasing five straight wins to maintain their position as CDRL pace setters.

In the lower grades, they are two battles which could very well serve as finals previews with both clubs in the top four.

1pm: Under-18s (4th v 2nd)

2.30pm: Reserves (3rd v 2nd)

4pm: A-grade (2nd v 6th)
