Lazarus Kingston faces Northern Territory Supreme Court after indecent assault on seven-year-old girl

She was only seven, but this tiny brave Territory sex assault victim used just a few words to scare her drunken assailant from continuing his sick violation on her body.

A little Territory girl bravely stood up to the man who was abusing her, by telling him she would tell her nanna if he did not stop, a court has heard.

Lazarus Kingston faced the Northern Territory Supreme Court on January 13, pleading guilty to one charge of indecently dealing with a child with a circumstance of aggravation.

The 54-year-old was sentenced to 27 months in jail for the attack on the child at Tennant Creek.

A prosecutor told the court Kingston attacked the child after “inviting her to his home”.

He was drunk and claimed he did not remember the assault, which involved only touching and was “momentary”, the court heard.

“I will proceed on the basis that the offence was opportunistic and that there was minimal premeditation involved,” Justice John Burns said while sentencing the offender.

“You say that you were shocked by your actions on this occasion and you believe that abstaining from alcohol will make sure that this type of offending does not happen again.”

The father-of-two took his “cultural obligations seriously”, Justice Burns said.

“You have been in custody during men’s business and you have found it difficult not being with your community during that time,” he said.

Kingston has been in custody since the offence.

In sentencing him to 27 months, Justice Burns said Kingston would remain behind bars until June 6 and the sentence would then be suspended for 18 months.
