A Top End art gallery is celebrating its first year of operations with a special artist talk this weekend.

The Laundry Gallery, established by Darwin women Nina Fitzgerald and Laura Shellie, focuses on Indigenous storytelling and artistic expression.

The pair has co-ordinated nine exhibitions and five workshops in the past 12 months, the realisation of a long-held dream for the Top End.

“We were driven to share stories in a new way,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

Prominent artist Elizabeth Wullunmingu from Maningrida, whose work is featured in the current exhibition Dórdbalk kómabba, meaning “everything’s good”, will speak at the event.

Ms Fitzgerald said the space had provided an incredible opportunity for artists to sell their work in an innovative manner.

Instead of conventional white walls, where the art is hung, the gallery showcases walls that change colour.

The contributions of 28 artists from remote corners of the Top End have been displayed.

These artists come from communities such as Lajumanu, Gunbalanya, Kakadu, Tennant Creek, Tiwi Islands, Ngukurr, and Maningrida.

“I was born and raised in Darwin and have strong connections, which helped in the beginning,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

The gallery welcomes a variety of artwork, including pieces on paper, carvings, illustrations, hunting spears, acrylic on wood, fibre weavings, and a full exhibition of texta drawings that have been sold globally, including in Canada, the US, and Europe.

Ms Fitzgerald said she envisioned the rapidly growing gallery expanding its reach worldwide.

“Amsterdam and its surrounding areas have shown interest as there is a market for these artists over there,” she said.

Ms Fitzgerald said she hoped the Laundry Gallery would hold monthly exhibitions in the future.

The artist talk will be held at 11am Saturday at the Laundry Gallery at 1 Vickers St, Parap.
