Townsville racer Lachlan Evennett broke through for his first national Formula Ford race win in the Australian Formula Ford Series (AFFS) at Morgan Park Raceway in Warwick.

The milestone result marks the latest triumph for the 17-year-old rising star of the track as the teenage talent sets his sights on the highest peaks of Australian motorsport.

Evennett had to overcome a mechanical issue during qualifying to podium in each race, starting race 1 from P9 and picking off drivers one by one as he climbed to the top three.

The progressive grid system meant he started race 2 in P3, holding on for a third-place finish, before stunning spectators with his first race win in the category.

Evennett said it was important to maintain good results after impressive showings at Bathurst and Symmons Plains in Tasmania.

“We had a little bit of a mechanical issue on qualifying, and I wasn’t able to set a lap, so I came from the back. It was very good result,” Evennett said.

“In this championship, you have to really keep as many points as you can and keep finishing on the podium, and it’s really important to keep finishing and just racking up the points over the year.

“The littlest margins can make a massive difference in this series.

“We’ve had Bathurst and Symmons Plains and those two have been pretty good so far. I exceeded my own expectations. I’ve been keeping the work up and building my confidence in the car.”

Next up for Townsville’s fastest teenager is the next V8 Australian Trans Am event in Darwin on June 20-22.

It will be his first time at the Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex, but Evennett said he was doing his homework on the track’s unique features.

“Going to Darwin, it’s the track I haven’t been to before, so it’ll take a little bit of getting used to,” Evennett said.

“I’m trying to prepare prior to the event just to know the track layout. I’m looking forward to it.

“There’s a few important corners on that track, and it’s a lot like Queensland Raceway, which is where I do all my testing. So I’m hoping I can take a bit of knowledge and apply it there.”

Following Darwin, Evennett will switch his focus back to his home track in Townsville where he will race in the Toyota 86 GR Cup. The Townsville 500 will be held on July 11-13.
