In his seven years of life, Patrick Fleming has already faced more challenges than most.

Born with multiple joint deformities, the brave boy from Katherine has undergone plaster casting to both his torso and legs, as well as having to endure various surgeries and treatments throughout his young life.

In 2021 alone, Patrick had four operations, more than 31 visits to hospital, and more than 130 physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions.

Adding to the adversity, the Fleming family has had to relocate twice to Brisbane where Patrick receives treatment at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

Patrick’s dad, Patrick Sr. Fleming, said the difficult journey had taken its toll.

“Being away for almost two years has been incredibly tough,” he said.

“But the support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation has been a lifeline – the foundation’s services like kidzone, and the family resource centre have made an unimaginable situation a little bit easier allowing us to focus on Patrick’s recovery.”

The incredible courage shown by young Patrick and his family has caught the attention of NightOwl, whihc has relayed Patrick’s story as part of a month-long fundraising effort to support sick kids.

From October 16 to November 12, NightOwl’s 85 stores will sell $2 wall tokens, with every dollar raised going towards the OwlGood Appeal – straight into the pocket of the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Children’s Hospital Foundation chief executive Lyndsey Rice said the funds would make a positive difference to the lives of many children.

“Every dollar raised through the OwlGood Appeal helps us provide vital equipment, research, and on the ground support for sick kids when they need it most,” she said.

“The generosity of NightOwl customers and dedication of their team mean the world to families like Patrick’s, who rely on these services during their toughest times.”

In two years, more than $58,000 has been raised through the appeal.
