A Townsville man was caught with drugs in his butt after police pulled him over on a mobility scooter in a “low speed pursuit.”

Jaron John Bradley Vickers appeared in Townsville Supreme Court on Thursday, a year after the “unusual” offending took place.

The 31-year-old was seen by police riding a mobility scooter in December, 2024, and they tried to intercept him, the court heard.

“You usually see elderly people driving them,” crown prosecutor Terrance McCosker said.

Vickers failed to comply with police directions as they tried to stop him, in what Justice Christopher Johnstone described as a “low speed pursuit.”

After officers were able to intercept Vickers, he began to act strangely and put his hands down the back of his pants and “near his rectum.”

“This was obviously unusual behaviour, so police searched his bottom, where they located the bag of methamphetamine, in which the defendant was basically trying to shelve into his anus,” Mr McCosker said.

The court heard 17.9 grams of meth was found in 22.7 grams of substance, and while Vickers was being searched, he yelled and kicked an officer.

After being taken to the watch-house, police continued to search Vickers’ person, and found clipseal bags, a glass pipe, digital scales, cash, a flip knife and a phone, which he refused to provide the passcode for.

Defence barrister Ross Malcomson said Vickers wished to be a “better father” to his children once released, as they have had to endure visiting him in custody.

Mr Malcomson said Vickers, who was supported by his mother in court, had completed a number of intervention programs while in custody, and intended to continue his rehabilitation upon release.

Justice Johnstone said Vickers had an “appalling” and “mixed bag” criminal history which began when he was 19 years old, with offences ranging from drug charges to choking.

Vickers pleaded guilty to possessing dangerous drugs, as well as a number of summary offences, including serious assault police officer, obstruct police officer, possession of a knife, trespassing, and a number of drug related utensils charges.

He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and released immediately on parole, as 354 days in pre-sentence custody was declared as time already served.

“You have the opportunity, though it is slowly disappearing in the distance, to turn your life around,” Justice Johnstone said.
