For those crossing the Berrimah Line, the sight of two particularly large cranes planted in a random work yard would have caught their eye.
Capable of hoisting 50 tonnes, the cranes are Chinese made SCE4800As and have been brought to Darwin specifically to help Inpex advance their Darwin operations.
Their serial numbers are ‘1’ and ‘2’ respectively - the first of their kind in the world.
At 72 metres height, the incredible machinery can hold a 10 tonne object.
At 40 metres, 50 tonnes can be moved.
As impressive as the cranes are from below, its scenic views at 70 metres offers a new perspective of greater Darwin.
“You don’t have vertigo do you?” a worker asked as the crane elevated.
Darwin Harbour, Palmerston, and the CBD are easily seen on a clear, dry season day.
Currently situated in Berrimah, the cranes will soon be stripped apart, transported to the Inpex worksite and assembled again.
