A world famous NT tourism destination has also been recognised as a leading trainer of Indigenous students. Read the details.

A skills trainer operating out of a world famous Northern Territory tourist destination has been recognised for its “milestone” achievements.

The National Indigenous Training Academy (NITA) operates out of Ayers Rock Resort near the iconic Uluru and Mossman Gorge in Far North Queensland.

Tourism company Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia operates the academy, which has seen 650 Indigenous students graduate with certificates in tourism and hospitality at its NT site since 2011.

The registered training organisation was named as a finalist for the NT Training Awards in the Small Training provider of the Year category, which will be held on September 13.

More recently, NITA graduate and current NITA trainer Kit Hawes was awarded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year at the GTNT Group Awards in June this year.

“These milestones reflect the dedication of our students, trainers, and community partners,” Voyages chief-executive Matt Cameron-Smith said.

“NITA is not just a training academy — it’s a launch pad for Indigenous success.

“At Voyages, we believe in creating pathways that empower Indigenous Australians to thrive in the tourism industry and beyond.

“NITA plays a vital role in this mission — providing not only skills and qualifications, but also confidence, pride, and a sense of purpose.

“Seeing our graduates succeed and lead in their communities is the most rewarding outcome of all.

“We’re incredibly proud of Kit and all our graduates who are shaping the future of their communities.”

Award winner Ms Hawes encouraged other Indigenous students to give NITA a go.

“Being part of NITA has changed my life,” Ms Hawes said.

“I’ve gained skills, confidence, and a clear path forward.

“I hope more young Indigenous Australians take this opportunity — it’s worth it.”

Since NITA was established, the Indigenous workforce at Ayers Rock Resort has grown from five per cent in 2011 to 28 per cent in 2024.

Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia is a subsidiary business of the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation which is a statutory authority established by the Australian federal government.
