Six of the nation’s best Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists will be named at the 2024 NATSIAA ceremony in just two weeks’ time.
The winners will be selected from a pool of 72 finalists after 238 entries were submitted to this year’s Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards.
The categories include the art award, general painting award, bark painting award, work on paper award, Mandjuk Marika 3D memorial award, and the emerging artist award.
NATSIAA Creative Director Ben Graetz said the awards ceremony on August 9 would showcase the “diverse and rich” talents of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
He said the ceremony would be a testament to their “enduring spirit and resilience”.
“MC Megan Waters, a proud Warumungu/Yawuru woman, is a versatile media presenter and fitness professional known for her strong cultural connection and vibrant energy,” Mr Graetz said.
“Dr Shellie Morris AO, a Yanyuwa and Wardaman woman, empowers Aboriginal communities through her multi-award-winning music, performed in 17 Aboriginal languages.
“She joins Arrkula Yinbayarra, a group of resilient women from Borroloola in the Gulf of Carpentaria, passionately reclaim endangered languages through music, while Emily Wurramara, a Warnindhilyagwa woman from Groote Eylandt, blends English and Anindilyakwa in her acclaimed blues and roots music.
“We also have a few surprises up our sleeves, so watch out for another announcement soon.”
The 2024 NATSIAA exhibition will be on display until January 27 2025.
