The iconic swimming hole has closed amid increased water levels, debris and risk of crocodile activity.

The inevitable but sudden closure of Wangi Falls has left Territorians with one less swimming hole in which to enjoy this wet season.

On Thursday, NT Parks and Wildlife issued a statement which confirmed the iconic swimming hole was closed effective immediately.

“Increasing water levels, along with debris in the plunge pool and creek have made swimming and Wangi Falls and accessing the loop walk unsafe.”

The statement warned Territorians to “not swim” due to increased risk of crocodile activity.

“High water levels and turbulence make it necessary to remove crocodile traps,” the statement read.

“There is also an increased risk of saltwater crocodiles entering the pool, so do not swim while it is shut.

“Trapping and crocodile surveys will resume at the end of the wet season.”

Earlier this year, Joel and Meghan Bennett were rescued by two men in a tinnie at Wangi Falls after another man was attacked by a 2m croc in the water.

NT Parks and Wildlife did confirm, however, other swimming spots remained open.

“With further rainfall expected, Wangi Falls is likely to remain closed to swimming until late May 2024 – other swimming spots remain open in Litchfield.”

Wangi Falls enjoyed a memorable 2023, with the swimming hole making national headlines when a rogue crocodile attacked a swimmer at the height of the dry season.
