A former Royal Australian Navy boat will find a new home along Townsville’s waterfront, where it will be permanently displayed.
HMAS Townsville will be relocated from the Townsville Marine Precinct to the disused Curtain Brothers Slipway.
The 42m long vessel is owned Maritime Museum of Townsville, who are partnering with the Port of Townsville to move the vessel to it’s new spot.
“The relocation, undertaken in partnership with Port of Townsville, will take place on 23 July, weather and tides permitting, when the HMAS Townsville is moved up the Ross Creek for dry docking,” a Port spokesman said.
“The HMAS Townsville relocation is the first step in works being undertaken to beautify and increase connectivity on Port lands on the bank of the Ross Creek from Lighthouse Park on Palmer Street to Quayside Terminal on Lennon Drive, with footpath upgrades and a HMAS Townsville viewing platform soon to come.”
One of the 5 Fremantle Class Patrol Boats (FCPBs) built for and operated exclusively by the Royal Australian Navy, HMAS Townsville was commissioned in July 1981 and decommissioned in Cairns in 2017.
It was then gifted to the Maritime Maritime Museum of Townsville by the Commonwealth Department of Defence.
The hull was refurbished in Cairns between 2015 and 2016 before it was moved to the Townsville Marine Precinct.
In late 2024 HMAS Townsville was removed from the water and had it’s hull cleaned and minor repairs done before it was placed back.
Water and landside exclusion zones will be in place to ensure public safety during this time, with more information to come closer to the date.
